🎓 Academic Thesis & Project Manual

This chapter outlines the foundational standards, definitions, procedural checklists, and structural requirements for completing a senior undergraduate project or graduate master’s thesis.

This manual is designed to assist you in meeting the requirements for the preparation of a graduate thesis or senior project. Many questions regarding the process and the format for your manuscript are answered in these pages. Since this manual cannot encompass all situations and problems which may arise in your work on a thesis or project, you should discuss any particular problem with your thesis committee or with your faculty research advisor.

1. Core Definitions: Thesis vs. Project

Most faculty view the thesis and the project as equally acceptable in the fulfillment of the requirements for a bachelor’s or master’s degree. In order to lessen confusion concerning these alternatives, the following definitions are provided:

The Thesis

A thesis is the written product of the systematic study of a significant problem. It clearly identifies the problem, states the major assumptions, explains the significance of the undertaking, sets forth the sources and methods of gathering information, analyzes the data, and offers conclusions or recommendations. The finished product must demonstrate originality, critical thinking, and thorough documentation. Normally, an oral defense is required.

The Project

A project is a significant undertaking appropriate to fine and applied arts or professional fields. It must demonstrate originality, independent thinking, appropriate form, organization, and a clear rationale. It must be summarized in a written abstract outlining significance, objectives, methodology, and recommendations. An oral defense may be required.

The Research Project

A research project contributes to the natural sciences, forensic sciences, social sciences, humanities, or technical professions by adding to existing professional knowledge. Examples include designing an experiment, a field study, a case study, a documentary report, or a professional article of publishable quality.

2. Criteria for Acceptance

The bachelor’s or master’s thesis or project is ordinarily the first serious attempt of a student to demonstrate the ability, under faculty supervision, to investigate, develop, and organize materials pertaining to a topic or problem in a field of interest and to exhibit findings in a scholarly statement written in clear, concise, formal English.

Before a thesis or project is officially accepted, it must meet specific criteria regarding format, documentation, and quality of writing. Each thesis or project must include:

  • A four-chapter or five-chapter project format (Introductory chapter, Literature Review, Methodology, Analysis of Data, Discussion of Results, Bibliography, and Appendices).
  • A comprehensive review of relevant scholarly and professional literature.
  • A clear statement of the undertaking's significance and contribution to the discipline.
  • Appropriate scholarly references, notations, and complete bibliographic documentation.
Important Standard: Mere description, cataloging, compilation, and other superficial procedures are not adequate. The details of the study, criteria used, and supporting data must be stated with uncompromising scholarly rigor.

3. Checklist for Students Writing Theses and Projects

1. Register for the appropriate thesis or project course at the beginning of the term agreeable to you, your Advisor, and your committee.
2. Work closely with your committee chairperson in developing your thesis or project topic.
3. Confer with your committee chair and faculty regarding preliminary approval of the format prior to preparing the final draft.
4. Accurately complete the Thesis/Project Submission Form. Your name and title on the form must match the title on the thesis exactly.
5. Secure required signatures in black ink (Committee on approval page, Chair on abstract, Department Chair on format approval page).
6. Pay binding and archival fees prior to the filing deadline.

4. Form, Style, and Arrangement

The basic form for all manuscripts is given in the latest edition of the APA Publication Manual. The single-sided manuscript is recommended and is to be arranged in the following standardized sequence:
