âī¸ The Blueprints of Replicability
Chapter Three details the methods and procedures of the investigation. It must be written with absolute precision so another researcher can replicate the process exactly.
The Five Pillars of Chapter Three
1. Statement of Testable Null Hypotheses
Contains the numbered null hypotheses (H01, H02...) tested statistically. Avoid directional predictions here; the null hypothesis posits no significant difference or correlation between groups on the target variable.
2. Description of Subjects & Sampling
Thorough demographic profile (age, gender, ethnicity, socio-economic stratum, linguistic background). Explicit sampling technique (random, stratified, systematic, or purposive). Full justification of sample size N adequacy and dropout attrition analysis.
3. Research Instrumentation (Reliability & Validity)
Detailed description of every questionnaire, corpus, testing instrument, or software apparatus used. Specific indices of reliability (Cronbach's alpha, test-retest r) and validity (content, construct, criterion). Pilot field-test protocols if using self-developed instruments.
4. Step-by-Step Procedures
Exhaustive procedural walkthrough: Where, when, and by whom was testing conducted? How were experimental conditions manipulated? How were raters and judges trained? What organizational permissions were obtained?
5. Treatment of the Data
Specifies statistical models (e.g., ANOVA, multiple regression, chi-square) or qualitative coding frameworks (thematic analysis, grounded theory). Stating the predetermined significance alpha level (typically p < .05).
